Dr. J. P. condemns attack on Taslima

Hyderabad, Aug. 9

Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan, Lok Satta Party National Coordinator, today described the attack on writer Taslima Nasreen as a blot on democracy and Indian culture, known for its hospitality.

Dr. Jayaprakash said in a statement: "Democracy gives space for resolution of all disputes through constitutional means. In today's political climate, every disagreement is elevated to a level of conflict and easy recourse to violence has become the norm. All political parties, civil society leaders and print and electronic media should have an obligation to curb these illiberal and violent tendencies"

Dr. Jayaprakash said it was reprehensible that legislators, who should set an example to others, resorted to extra-constitutional means.

Dr. Jayaprakash demanded that the accused be brought to book straightway.
