Over the past few decades, Indian youth has shown signs
of strong disenchantment with contemporary politics. For
a young nation such as India, where 75 % of the
population is less than 37 years old, this trend can be
allowed to continue only at great risk to our collective
future. It is high time ownership of the political space
is shifted to the poor, disempowered, marginalized
communities, and especially the young and educated
citizens of India. It is time politics shows the way
towards eliminating corruption in public life, and
provide quality and meaningful public healthcare,
education, and employable skills among youth. It is time
we moved away from the culture of money-and-muscle power
politics and bring to fruition, a new political culture
that the new generation of Indians truly deserves.
With this vision, Lok Satta Party was launched on 2nd
October, 2006. It is a national party in its goals,
outlook, and functioning, but is presently focusing on
Andhra Pradesh State for practical organizational
reasons.
'1-crore People Outreach Programme'
An immediate and important challenge is to redirect
political debate to real issues that shape the future of
the society, namely healthcare, education, agriculture,
rule of law, employment generation etc. Lok Satta has
taken up this challenge by undertaking a massive
outreach programme across all districts of Andhra
Pradesh. This outreach effort is in the form of a survey
capturing people's core issues - the issues that
politics ought to really focus on. The goal of this
survey is to generate and channelize the demand for a
better culture of politics that leads the way towards
solving these critical public issues.
This outreach programme aims to reach one crore citizens
or 20 lakh families (one in every seven persons in the
state!) by the end of this year. In each district, about
1000 volunteers are reaching out to one lakh families.
These activities are being taken up in the Hyderabad
region also.
Membership Enrolment and Voters' List corrections:
Volunteers are also helping interested citizens enroll
as members of Lok Satta Party. Since November 6th, when
enrolment began, 59,839 citizens across the State (as on
23rd November) became members of Lok Satta Party.
Another 30,000 had contacted the Party office through
email, phone calls, SMS and letters/notes expressing
interest. Volunteers for the above Survey will also be
assisting interested people enroll as party members.
Simultaneously, volunteers are also guiding eligible
citizens, irrespective of their political sympathies, on
getting enrolled as voters and on eliminating bogus
names in the local voters' lists. As a direct result of
Lok Satta's diligent advocacy, research and awareness
efforts, Post Offices have now become the nearest and
most convenient nodal centers for voter enrolment. You
